LAGOS, October 23, 2025 – The Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, today unveiled plans for the Lagos International Climate Change Summit (LICCS) 2025, set to take place on November 6-7 at The Lagos Continental. Themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” the Summit aims to position Lagos as Africa’s climate capital, transforming coastal vulnerabilities into economic and ecological opportunities.
Speaking at a media briefing in Eko Atlantic City, a symbol of sustainable urban development, Commissioner Wahab emphasized Lagos’ dual identity as a vibrant coastal megacity and one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. “Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and flooding are daily realities,” he noted, “but in Lagos, we see vulnerability as a catalyst for vision and opportunity. ”The 2025 Summit will convene over 1,200 delegates, including global CEOs, international agency heads, financiers, researchers, and youth innovators, to design actionable, bankable climate solutions.
Key focus areas include harnessing the Blue Economy for sustainable ocean-based growth, mobilizing Green Finance for renewable energy and circular economy initiatives, empowering young African climate entrepreneurs, and fostering cross-sector partnerships. Strategically timed ahead of COP30, the Summit will amplify Lagos’ local actions on the global stage, showcasing investments in coastal defenses, urban greening, flood mitigation, and renewable energy as models for African cities. “Africa is not waiting to be rescued. We are ready to lead,” Wahab declared.
The Commissioner acknowledged key partners, including Eko Atlantic, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for their support in advancing Lagos’ sustainability agenda. The event concluded with an invitation to stakeholders, media, and the global community to join the Summit and contribute to building a resilient, innovative, and green Lagos. “Together, let us chart the course for Africa’s coastal resilience and ocean innovation,” Wahab urged.
