Richard Kahn, former President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Los Angeles at the age of 95. A titan of the film industry, Kahn’s six-decade career and leadership left an enduring impact on both the Academy and the broader entertainment community.
Kahn’s daughters, Sharon Kahn and Lisa Kahn Feldstern, remembered him fondly: “Our Dad was kind, generous, and a wonderful father with a wry sense of humor. We will miss him dearly.” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang added, “Richard’s vision and dedication shaped traditions that endure today. His loss is deeply felt, and we extend our sympathies to his family.”
Beginning his career at Columbia Pictures after graduating from the Wharton School and serving as a U.S. Navy officer during the Korean War, Kahn worked on iconic films such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, and Network. He later joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1975, eventually becoming executive vice president of marketing for MGM and United Artists. In 1983, he founded a film marketing consultancy with his wife, Marianne, and taught at USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program.
A member of the Academy since 1964, Kahn served as President from 1988–1989, as a governor for 12 years, and in multiple leadership roles. He spearheaded initiatives like the Academy’s new member receptions and the inaugural Nominees Luncheon in 1982. Beyond the Academy, Kahn led the Film Information Council (1985–1995) and earned the Hollywood Reporter’s Key Art Pioneer Award in 2000.
Kahn is survived by his daughters, Sharon and Lisa, son-in-law Honorable Daniel Feldstern, and grandson Nick Fasulo-Feldstern and his wife, Jenn. His legacy as a leader, innovator, and friend will continue to inspire the film industry and its stakeholders.
