The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the awards rules, campaign promotional regulations, and key dates for the 98th Oscars®, set to air live on ABC on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Significant updates include mandatory viewing of all nominated films in each category for final voting eligibility and the codification of rules for the inaugural Academy Award® for Achievement in Casting.
Key Rule Changes:
- Generative AI: The Academy’s Science and Technology Council introduced language stating that AI and digital tools neither enhance nor detract from nomination chances, emphasizing human creative authorship.
- Best Picture: Films must submit proof of Producers Guild of America (PGA) mark certification or awards-only determination by September 10, 2025 (Jan–June releases) or November 13, 2025 (July–Dec releases).
- Casting Award: A preliminary voting round will shortlist 10 films, followed by a “bake-off” presentation for Casting Directors Branch members.
- Animated Short Film: All Academy members opting in can vote in the nominations round after viewing all 15 shortlisted films.
- Cinematography: A preliminary voting round will shortlist 10–20 films.
- International Feature Film: Eligibility now includes filmmakers with refugee or asylum status for creative control.
- Music Categories: Original Song submissions are due October 15, 2025; Original Score submissions by November 3, 2025.
