LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate the remarkable contributions of Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, Dolly Parton, and Wynn Thomas at its 16th Governors Awards on November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. The Board of Governors voted to present Academy Honorary Awards to Allen, Cruise, and Thomas, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Parton, recognizing their profound impact on the film industry and beyond.
Academy President Janet Yang praised the honorees, stating, “This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact.”
Debbie Allen is recognized for her trailblazing work as a choreographer, actor, and producer. With a career spanning nearly five decades, she has choreographed the Academy Awards seven times and films like Forget Paris and The Six Triple Eight. Her producing credits include Amistad, while her acting roles in Fame and Ragtime have left a lasting legacy.
Tom Cruise, a global icon and advocate for the theatrical experience, is honored for his contributions to cinema, including performing his own stunts. His notable works include Oscar-nominated performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, as well as producing the Oscar-nominated Top Gun: Maverick. Cruise’s filmography also includes Risky Business, A Few Good Men, and the Mission: Impossible series.
Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her extensive charitable work. A music and film icon, Parton starred in Nine to Five and Steel Magnolias and earned two Oscar nominations for Original Song. Her Dollywood Foundation, established in 1988, supports educational initiatives, and her Imagination Library has distributed 285 million books to children worldwide since 1995.
Wynn Thomas, an acclaimed production designer, is celebrated for his visionary work on films like Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, Do the Right Thing, and Malcolm X, as well as A Beautiful Mind and Hidden Figures.
The Honorary Award recognizes lifetime achievement and exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, while the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award honors individuals whose humanitarian efforts enhance the industry’s legacy. The event is presented in partnership with Rolex, the Exclusive Watch of the Academy.
